Presented by Tyrone Ross, Jr.
Education is the foundation of the financial advisor-client relationship. Advisors need to be educated--not just before they start their practice, but on an ongoing basis throughout their career. In turn, the most effective financial advisors educate their clients, empowering them to make sound financial and life decisions. However, rapid expansion of the cryptoasset markets hasn’t afforded advisors the kind of grace period for educating themselves on this new and novel asset class that they have had with traditional investments. In addition, the growth of cryptoassets has been driven primarily by retail investors. That has led to a dynamic where in some cases clients have a better understanding of the asset class than their financial advisors do.

Join Onramp CEO & Co- Founder Tyrone Ross as he breaks down the essentials and investment theses for Crypto to empower today's financial advisors to be better prepared to speak to clients about this asset class.

Topics Covered:

● Preparing your practice
● Client conversations
● Education, Access & Tools for ongoing practice management

Tyrone is a financial consultant, early-stage start-up advisor, entrepreneur, and athlete. His journey as a first-generation high school graduate to business owner has provided valuable business and life lessons. Tyrone graduated from Seton Hall University and was also a 2004 Olympic Trials qualifier in track and field in the 400 meters. He was recognized by Investment News 40 under 40 (2019), and WealthManagement.com as a top ten advisor set to change the industry in 2019. Financial Planning.com named Tyrone as one of 20 people who will change wealth management in 2020. He currently serves as Director of Community at Altruist as well as the host of The Human Advisor podcast.

Why Social Security Matters: And How to Get the Most out of It
Presented by Robert Kron, Advisor Education Consultant, nuveen

Financial professionals who can provide education and guidance on Social Security as part of the retirement planning process are more likely than their peers to retain retiring clients, grow wallet share and gain referrals. Learning objectives:

  1. Understand how to start the Social Security conversation with clients; what have they been buying all these years, the importance of reviewing the Social Security statement, and the basics of collecting early or waiting.
  2. Help clients make an informed collection decision: longevity considerations, identifying all eligible benefits, evaluating collection options using a lifetime cash flow analysis.

Self-Determination Theory: Leveraging Your Clients’ Innate Desire for Growth
Presented by Amy Mullen, CFP®President of Money Quotient, Inc., Money Quotient

Self-determination theory suggests that people are motivated to grow and change by three innate psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and connection. During this presentation, MQ President Amy Mullen describes how advisors can frame their work with clients to respond to these needs and enhance the financial planning process. Introduced in their 1985 book, Self-Determination and Intrinsic Motivation in Human Behavior, Edward Deci and Richard Ryan developed a theory of motivation that suggests we are actively directed toward growth in these areas:

  •  Autonomy: we need to feel that we are in control of our behaviors and goals. This feeling of autonomy is at the foundation of our belief that our actions will result in real change. Could a lack of autonomy be getting in the way of implementation?
  • Competence: we need to gain mastery and learn different skills. If we feel we have the skills we need to be successful, we’re more likely to take action to help us achieve our goals. How can advisors support their client’s competence and mastery of their financial lives?
  • Connection or relatedness: we must experience a sense of belonging and attachment to other people. What can advisors do to help clients tie their financial lives to the motivations that bring them a sense of connection?

This presentation will discuss the advisor’s role in nurturing their clients’ desire for autonomy, competence, and connection; suggest ways they can work with clients to uncover intrinsic aspirations; and provide tips for offering guidance to their clients that will foster positive change.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Gain a deeper understanding of self-determination theory, its impact on human behavior, and its focus on external and internal influences that affect an individual’s quality of motivation.
  2. Learn how meeting the psychological needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness can create an opportunity for supporting positive change in your clients’ lives.
  3. Adopt practical strategies for creating an autonomous supportive environment that will increase your effectiveness in developing successful and satisfying client relationships.

What Amy does: Consulting with Financial Planners on integrating a life planning process into their practice. Training on communication and coaching skills. Development of tools and programs to help Financial Planners guide clients through a life planning process. Specialties: Ms. Mullens provide tools and training to financial professionals to guide their clients through a life planning process. This process helps the client to discover their true values, develop goals that are meaningful and bring purpose to the client's lives, and concentrate on what is most important to them to maximize the happiness in their lives. Equipped with this new vision, the financial professional can then align the client's finances with what is most important to them.
