About this Presentation

The presentation will review the estate planning issues given the current uncertainty in federal estate tax laws. The current federal estate tax exemption is set to decrease substantially in 2026. Additionally, there are rumors of new legislation being passed to drastically change the estate tax exemption in particular or even upend the entire estate tax structure as we know it. We will review the impact of the current law sunsetting in 2026, the various rumored changes, and the corresponding estate planning opportunities and pitfalls.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how the current estate tax law will sunset.
  • Be aware of the potential new legislation to further change the current estate tax laws.
  • Consider estate planning opportunities and pitfalls to address uncertainty in the future federal estate tax exemption.

 About the Presenters

Stefan Wolf, Shareholder, Estate Planning, Gevurtz Menashe:
Stefan Wolf is a Shareholder and Estate Planning attorney at Gevurtz Menashe. He is a proud Portland native and received his Juris Doctorate from Lewis and Clark School of Law. With over a decade of estate planning experience, exclusively, he regularly assists clients in Oregon and Washington with wills, trusts, planning for incapacity, gift tax returns, estate tax returns, and probate and trust administration matters. Guided by his passion for helping clients through critical personal and financial decisions, Stefan believes estate planning is one of the most important aspects of a person’s financial life. He approaches each client’s situation by identifying their personal and financial goals, and understanding their family dynamics, so that their estate can be handled in accordance with their wishes and in a tax-efficient manner. For fun, Stefan enjoys skiing, soccer, and spending time with his wife Blair, and their two busy kids, Ruby and Von.

Sara Winter, Associate, Estate Planning, Gevurtz Menashe:
Sara Winter is a recent Texas transplant and Gevurtz Menashe’s newest Estate Planning Associate. With a JD from Texas Tech and an LL.M (a Masters in Law) in Taxation from University of Washington, Sara is the team’s secret weapon in all things “tax-related”. She uses her decade of estate planning expertise—and her special focus on tax planning for clients, whether it is income, gift, or estate related. Born with a true gift of southern charm, Sara has a natural talent of instantly connecting with people. Both personally and professionally, building great relationships has always been the cornerstone of her success. Whether she’s helping clients plan for their future or guiding them through the loss of a loved one, her goal is to give clients comfort that their loved ones are taken care of. When she’s not helping clients and nerding out over “tax law”, you’ll find Sara playing outdoors with her husband and their French Bulldog, Butters.
