Death Taxes (How We Got Here, Where We Are, and Where We Are Going)
Presented by Joe Huddleston, Mannix Law Firm

FIRST HALF: The presentation examines the history of estate and inheritance taxes (death taxes) both in the U.S. and globally and arguments for and against. Then, we turn to the existing estate and inheritance tax schemes across the U.S. (and globally), including any pending changes.

SECOND HALF: We will also focus on the history and prospective reforms in Oregon. We will finish with an overview of mechanics and key elements of the federal estate tax and Oregon’s estate tax.

Learning Objectives:

  • High-level understanding of the history and debates of estate and inheritance taxes and the various estate and inheritance tax schemes around the U.S. and globally.
  • More focused understanding of Oregon and federal estate taxes.

Meet the Speaker:

Joe Huddleston grew up on the Oregon Coast and received his undergraduate degree in Economics from Oregon State University. During his education, Joe spent summers as a commercial fisherman in Alaska. After Oregon State University, Joe moved to Salem, Oregon to attend law school at Willamette University College of Law. During law school, Joe worked at Kevin L. Mannix, P.C., as well as another general practice law firm in Seaside, Oregon. After receiving his Doctor of Jurisprudence and Certificate in Business Law, Joe joined Kevin L. Mannix, P.C., as an Associate Attorney. In his free time, Joe enjoys spending time with his wife and son, tending to his yard, golfing, everything football, playing with his dogs, winter sports, and being on the water.

Joe’s primary focuses include administrative law; business law; civil litigation and appeals; probate and trust administration; real estate and some land use; and wills and trusts. Joe’s favorite area of practice is handling appellate cases, but his “bread and butter” is estate administration/planning and real estate. Joe’s approach to litigation reflects his economics background, always asking himself: “from a cost-benefit perspective what is the best route or solution for the client?

The Next Evolution of Wealth Management: From Financial Goals to What Matters Most
Presented by Julia Tierney, CFP®, Vista Capital Partners

Financial advice has evolved from investment management to comprehensive financial planning. And now changing client expectations are driving the next evolution. Clients increasingly want help connecting their financial decisions to what matters most – their values, families, and sense of purpose. As wealth moves across generations, advisors have an opportunity to move beyond traditional financial goals to help clients explore not only how much is enough, but what their wealth is ultimately for. This session will explore practical ways to bring these deeper conversations into the planning process to help advisors deliver more meaningful advice, deepen client relationships, and build connections across generations.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize how client expectations are changing and what that means for the role of the financial advisor.
  • Use values-based questions to uncover what matters most to clients beyond their stated financial goals.
  • Identify ways to bring values, purpose, and family into the planning process to build deeper, more lasting client relationships.

Meet the Speaker: Julia Tierney, CFP® is a Partner, Lead Advisor, and Director of Legacy Planning at Vista Capital Partners. She helps individuals and families look beyond the numbers to explore what they want their wealth to mean, not simply what they want it to accomplish. Julia has worked in financial services since 2009 and is a graduate of the University of Oregon.
