Opening Keynote: A Different Way to Invest (Investor Behavior) - Presented by Apollo Lupescu, PhD, Vice President, Dimensional Fund Advisors
This presentation answers key questions many investors ask and highlights Dimensional's research-based approach to investing. Discussing overarching themes such as inflation, risk tolerance, market efficiency, global diversification, and market timing, this presentation presents an alternative approach that is rooted in robust academic research, based on concepts such as market and asset pricing, tradeoffs in investing, and maintaining discipline towards an attainable goal.

Learning Objectives:

  • Advisors need to understand the technical aspects of the investment process to build conviction that they are doing the right thing for their clients.
  • When communicating this process to retail investors, advisors generally need to reduce technical jargon and be more plainspoken.
  • Based on each client's level of acumen, advisors must find the balance between presenting data and evidence, relative to storytelling and use of analogies.

Cyber Security Panel: What You Need to Know Now and for the Future - Presented by George Chamberlin, Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC), FBI Portland Field Office; Diane Girard, CPCU, CIC, Senior Vice President, Durham & Bates Insurance; & Ben Goodman, Founder, 4A Security and Compliance - Moderated by Cyndi Thompson, MS, CFP®
Join us as we host a diverse panel of experts in cyber security.  Our presentation will start with an FBI agent involved in fighting cybercrimes in our area. He will share insights on what is happening in this well-organized and destructive criminal realm.  Next, Ben Goodman, CRISC, will discuss work in the industry for protecting us from this constant threat.  Ben is the founder of 4A Security and Compliance, a national firm that helps clients such as American Express and GE Capital strengthen their information security while managing cyber risk and meeting their compliance requirements.  Ben is the recipient of ISACA’s CRISC, Worldwide Achievement Award.   Finally, we’ll conclude with a presentation from Diane at Durham & Bates on the logistics of insuring against this risk.

  • Why cyber risk is a real and growing threat to the financial planning sector.
  • What types of cyber losses are most prevalent today, which threat actors are targeting the financial planning industry and its clients, and which cyber security and risk management measures are the most effective protections against such losses.
  • How financial planning professionals can apply cyber risk management, including mitigation by strengthening security preparedness, and risk transfer through cyber insurance, to protect their own,  and their clients' assets.

You will learn what specific sectors, types of properties, and varying global regions, appear to offer the most opportunity currently.  This session will also be a discussion about the various channels available to investors for accessing the real estate asset class, and how this has evolved in the last decade.  This information is pertinent to all investors, whether individuals, institutions, family offices or endowments.

The Four Common Uses of a Reverse Mortgage Modeled in Financial Software - Presented by Paul Pomeroy, Reverse Mortgage Planning Specialist, Reverse Mortgage Funding (RMF)
Paul Pomeroy will address some of the misinformation still surrounding reverse mortgages, providing facts financial professionals need to know. The presentation will include the most recent changes by FHA, the new low cost portfolio Jumbo reverse mortgage and client case studies modeled in MoneyguidePro, eMoney and Right Capital to demonstrate why researchers such as Wade Pfau, John Salter and Michael Kites say; home equity can have a tremendous impact on client retirement outcomes. The Four common Uses of a Reverse Mortgages will show various outcomes for clients who no longer are making mortgage payments, receive monthly payments, finance a new home with a reverse mortgage or choose a line of credit with a guaranteed growth feature. After demonstrating the impact of these reverse mortgage strategies, Paul will highlight the Optimizer, a new illustration tool from RMF, which illustrates credit line options maximizing plan outcomes increasing cash flow and the impact on legacy values.

  • Participants will gain an awareness of the recent changes to inherited traditional retirement accounts.
  • The presentation will additionally cover the income tax consequences for inherited traditional retirement accounts.
  • Lastly, participants should come away with an understanding of the options for estate planning solutions to account for income tax consequences.

Alan’s engaging presentation focuses on developing planning skills and strengthening relationships by reinforcing the professional development and and leadership skills that are essential for success. It is an engaging visual and educational journey that is supported by many of the stunning photos and short videos captured along the expedition. From teetering across ladders spanning seemingly bottomless crevasses and fighting the many altitude-related sicknesses to clambering up vertical ice faces, every segment of the expedition was filled with intense, extraordinary challenges.
