Taylor Kittell is a Founding Partner at Breakwater Law. Taylor’s practice focuses on estate planning (wills, trusts, planning for incapacity) and administration (probate, trust administration, guardianships, and conservatorships).  Above all else, Taylor values her relationships with clients and professional colleagues.  She approaches the difficult issues of planning for death and incapacity as a pragmatic educator: every person should not only have an estate plan, they should understand it, and the plan should be attainable and realistic under the circumstances.  Tax and business succession planning is not a legal chess game, but a strategy to protect a client’s legacy effectively and efficiently.  Taylor enjoys working with clients who have a team of professional advisors to provide comprehensive and coordinated advice.
This course was approved for 1 CEU from the CFP Board.

The Shakespeare of Investing
Presented by William Bernstein, Efficient Frontier Advisors
space

That human beings exhibit irrational behavior at variance with conventional financial economic precepts is well established. Because of this, the most effective financial strategies of necessity violate these precepts; in other words, a suboptimal strategy that can be executed successfully will be superior to an optimal one that cannot be executed.

Further, by far the most important episodes in an investor’s career occur in the worst states of the financial world, which tend to be brief. In other words, much, if not most, financial success hinges upon how an investor behaves in the worst few percent of the time.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the above behavioral issues contribute to wealth inequality.
  • Formulate “suboptimal” strategies to combat dysfunctional investing behavior.

About our Presenter: William Bernstein is a neurologist, co-founder of Efficient Frontier Advisors, an investment management firm, and has written several titles on finance and economic history. He has contributed to the peer-reviewed finance literature and has written for several national publications, including Money Magazine and The Wall Street Journal. He has produced several finance titles, and also four volumes of history, The Birth of Plenty, A Splendid Exchange, Masters of the Word, and The Delusions of Crowds about, respectively, the economic growth inflection of the early nineteenth century, the history of world trade, the effects of access to technology on human relations and politics, and the history and social psychology of mass manias. His was also the 2017 winner of the CFA Institute’s James R. Vertin Award.

This course was approved for 1 CEU from the CFP Board.

PERS Program Overview
Presented by Debbie Foote

This will be an overview presentation regarding PERS (Public Employees Retirement System) programs for all PERS members. This presentation will be a detailed overview of all the plans (Tier One, Tier Two, OPSRP, and IAP). Topics include benefit calculation factors, the Individual Account Program (IAP) including TDF and re-direct changes, a review of a sample estimate and other available member resources.

Learning Objective: That employees will understand the complexities of PERS calculations, resources available to members and be able to better assist them.

About Our Presenter: Debbie has been a PERS member for over 35 years and began working at PERS as an employee in 2007. She has been a part of the PERS Retirement Education team since 2009, and was promoted to Program Analyst and lead/coordinator of the team in 2013. As coordinator of the team she leads a group of 6 other presenters. The team provides group and individual meetings around the state to active and inactive members, and also to other requesting groups as the schedule allows. Over the years Debbie has met with thousands of members in individual meetings and group presentations. She has personally provided over 700 group presentations throughout the state for PERS members who are in every type of job category in public employment and in all stages of their careers. She also presents to PERS employer and financial planner groups who work with PERS members. Debbie looks forward to her own retirement, which she hopes will occur within the next 3-5 years.
